I used to hate yin yoga until...

This might come as a surprise to you… but I used to hate yin yoga because it was so slow (and I don't use the H word lightly)! 🙈

I wanted to move, sweat, do chatarungas to show off my strength, and slowing it down in yin really challenged me.

I wasn't able to keep my body still. My mind would race with a million thoughts. I thought that slowing it down meant I wasn't “good at yoga” and if I wasn't good at yoga, what did that say about me? I thought slowing down would make me look weak.

Here's what I've learnt since then… knowing when and how to slow down is an actual strength!

In a world where we are taught to do things fast, where our engagement with each other is a quick double tap of a photo, where we overfill our schedules, we've forgotten how to rest and relax. We actually need to more slow.

When you allow for it and learn how to slow down, there are so many possibilities! These are a few of my favourite reasons to practice yin yoga:

  • I build a deeper connection to myself and my body

  • I let the thoughts come and go, without attachments to stories

  • I let go of deeply held tension, tightness, and stress in both mind and body

  • I surrender to the present moment and allow myself to BE instead of DO

  • I feel more calm, relaxed and nourished

  • I connect more to my intuition and creativity – some of my best ideas for work and solutions to life challenges have come from yin yoga and in the art of slowing down

By slowing down, I've strengthened my relationship to myself and body moreso than doing 100x chatarungas.

What is your relationship to slowing down?

As my teacher says, if you have an aversion to it, you probably need to do more of it!
